An
opportunity can often be so close we can taste
it, but too secret for us to find it. This is
very common with respect to academic opportunities
for people of color. Lacking proper promotion,
funding, and advertising, many noteworthy programs
become no more than word-of-mouth myths. For
this reason msoy is dedicated
to sharing such opportunities with you.
Prep
for Prep is a long-term investment strategy
to develop the leadershippotential
of able young people from segments of society
grossly under-represented in the leadership pool
from which all of our major institutions draw.
By expanding the nation's leadership resources,
we aim to impact indirectly on a set of inter-related
problems that threaten to rend our society. Prep's
strategy is to identify talented students
from minority group backgrounds,
prepare them for placement in independent schools,
and provide a sense of community, peer support,
critical post-placement services, and a range
of leadership development opportunities. The Prep
Community includes over 2,000 students and alumni/ae.

budding entrepreneurship; are taking the first
steps toward financial independence; and make
a difference in their school and communities.
Scholarship prizes totaling $30,000 are awarded
among three top winners and 12 finalists each
year. The nomination period for the Girls Going
Places Scholarship Program begins September and
ends February. Winners and finalists are announced
in May. Scholarships are presented to each winner
and finalist in her community among her peers.
