A. Henry is a long time advocate for the development of
grass-roots programs and positive social change within
African American communities. She founded Multiple
Shades of You Online (msoy) in the year 2000,
creating one of few internet magazines for women of color
ages 5-25. Since its inception, Ms. Henry has expanded
the scope of msoy to include a number of web projects
and publications aimed at promoting positive content for
African Americans in media.
With a strong interest in technology,
Ms. Henry earned her Bachelor’s degree in Computer
Science from Columbia University. While at Columbia,
her fascination with both computers and community outreach
developed into a personal collaboration of technology
and social activism. In conjunction with her studies,
she became an active youth leader within her community.
She has worked with programs such as the All
Stars Project Inc., The
Liberty Partnerships Program at Barnard College,
and Prep
for prep.
Today,
Ms. Henry continues to support community outreach, but
in a different way. Determined to use technology as
a tool for social change, she spends most of her time
developing innovative msoy original projects and services.
She states, “I’ve traded in my long days
of telemarketing and tutoring, for long nights of typing.
Instead of actually working within one program, I want
to increase community awareness about all the programs
that exist. As a people, we have a great deal to offer
one another. I want to know that if there is a positive
black voice to be heard, I have done my part to create
spaces for others to hear it.”
